“NATURE RESERVES IN RUSSIA”

School Conference

“Among Russia's 101 zapovedniks, Barguzinsky has been one of the most beloved in Russia and abroad. Its popularity cannot be fully explained either by the romance associated with the name “Baikal” or the virgin nature preserved there. Barguzinsky Zapovednik is an object of national pride and a symbol of the conservation movement in Russia…”

“Baikal is the world's oldest, deepest, and coldest lake. Its cold temperatures have led to an unusual zonation of alpine plant life and forest distribution. Whereas larch forests are typically found in upper alpine zones, and dark conifers in the lower altitudes, in this zapovednik those trends are reversed. Here one can find more typical landscapes as well, including taiga and colorful alpine meadows, impassable shrub thickets and wide sandy beaches, high alpine lichen tundra and fields of grass as tall as a person, solid Siberian pines…”

“Kalevalsky National Park was created to protect one of the last large areas of natural forest preserves in Karelia, which is a remnant of the natural-cultural landscape central the Karelian epic Kalevala. The park encompasses taiga (northern forests) ecosystem, providing a model of nature undisturbed by humans…”

“I n 2006 Altaisky Zapovednik withstood an effort to convert it to a less protected national nature park. Altaisky Zapovednik, the third largest zapovednik, located in southern Siberia, encompasses 880,000 hectares and in 1998 was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The boundary of the preserve includes shoreline and approximately half the waters of Teletskoye Lake. Teletskoye is a 1000-foot-deep gem situated high in the boreal-forested mountains…”

“The Altai Foundation of Novosibirsk, Russia and Altai Conservancy of Woodstock, Vermont announced that the Altai Foundation was the recipient of the 2006 Environmental Award from the World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (WANGO)…”

“Rostov Nature Reserve protects a variety of sensitive southern European steppe wetlands, the largest herd of wild horses in Europe (the Don Mustangs), and also wetland habitat for birds. The protected areas are divided into five sections that cover the waters of Lake Manych-Gudilo,  islands in that lake, surrounding steppe and shore lands…”
